The fire departments of Göllheim, Dreisen, Winnweiler, and Enkenbach were dispatched to a traffic accident with an unclear situation on the A 63 in the direction of Kaiserslautern between the Göllheim and Winnweiler interchanges. This section of the highway falls within the Göllheim municipal association’s jurisdiction; however, due to the single-lane construction zone, crews are currently responding from both directions. In this case as well, this approach proved effective, as the Göllheim municipal association’s units were unable to reach the scene due to the traffic backup.
The first vehicle to arrive was an ambulance, which had entered the highway traveling in the opposite direction and was able to locate the incident site immediately near the construction zone exit at the Winnweiler interchange. A passenger car had collided with the construction zone barrier and come to rest on the temporary guardrail. The two occupants had already managed to free themselves from the vehicle and were being attended to by emergency medical personnel. Another car was struck in the collision; the driver was uninjured.
A vehicle from the Dreisen Fire Department had already issued a preliminary warning to motorists as it entered the highway. Firefighters from the Winnweiler Fire Department initially closed the A 63 entirely in the direction of Kaiserslautern, inspected the vehicle for leaking fluids, and ensured fire safety. Small amounts of leaking fluids were detected and collected in a trough. After the police completed their accident report, the lane was reopened to traffic; however, the Winnweiler exit remained closed. At the same time, a towing company and the highway maintenance department were notified. The occupants of the car refused to be transported to a hospital, so the ambulance returned to base without a patient. The scene was then handed over to the police.
The Enkenbach Fire Department initially remained on standby at the Sembach exit, but the firefighters were able to stand down shortly thereafter.
