Responsibilities of the Technology and Equipment Maintenance Department
According to Fire Department Service Regulation 3 (“Units in Firefighting and Rescue Operations”), the tactical units of the fire department consist of the crew and the operational resources. Operational resources refer to all vehicles and equipment that the crew needs to handle a wide variety of emergency scenarios. As the fire department’s scope of operations becomes increasingly complex, this equipment is also becoming more extensive and capable.
To ensure that vehicles and equipment remain fully functional at all times, the three full-time equipment maintenance technicians in the Fire Department’s Administrative Office are responsible for maintenance and repairs. Technical and equipment maintenance can be divided into three areas of responsibility.
Vehicles and Equipment
The Winnweiler Municipal Fire Department’s fleet currently consists of over 50 vehicles. It goes without saying that there is always something to do here. Since the vehicles are regularly in use, breakdowns or other damage naturally occur that must be repaired. But routine maintenance also represents a significant amount of work that should not be underestimated. In addition, all equipment carried on the vehicles must be checked regularly to ensure it is functioning properly.

Respiratory Protection Workshop
For firefighting operations, emergency responders need self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) to rescue people and fight fires during interior operations. Since these breathing apparatus serve as the “life insurance” for emergency responders, it goes without saying that special attention must be paid to their maintenance and functional testing. That is why the equipment technicians in this area have completed specialized training. With this expertise, they ensure that a sufficient number of breathing apparatus are ready for use at all times and, after each operation, handle the cleaning and inspection of the masks and equipment used, as well as the refilling of the breathing air cylinders.

Hose Repair Shop
Another area of responsibility is the hose workshop, where hoses used in operations are cleaned, inspected, and restored to working condition. This task also requires specialized training, which the equipment technicians have completed.
