Oak processionary moth
The oak processionary moth is a moth. It prefers a warm, dry climate and has been spreading more widely in Germany in recent years due to the increasingly mild climate. The caterpillars’ stinging hairs are dangerous to humans and animals and can trigger allergic reactions. The caterpillars that pose a danger to humans are most commonly found between April and August.
Danger to humans
The hairs of the oak processionary moth are mainly dangerous to humans in May and June. The 0.2-millimeter-long stinging hairs break off easily, are barbed, and contain a type of urticating toxin. The (nearly invisible) stinging hairs easily penetrate the skin and mucous membranes, where they become lodged with their barbs.
Direct contact with the caterpillars poses a particular risk. The stinging hairs penetrate the skin and irritate the epidermis and mucous membranes, potentially causing papules, wheals, and skin inflammation. The skin reactions often last one to two weeks (if left untreated). The molting nests, which remain on the infested trees even after the moths have emerged, pose a year-round hazard.
Precautions
- Avoid infested trees
- Do not touch caterpillars or spider webs under any circumstances!
- If you spot any oak processionary moth nests in public areas, please report them immediately to the fire department (Tel: 06302/5040)
- If you find a nest on your property, contact a professional company that specializes in nest removal.
When coming into contact with caterpillars or webs
- Change your clothes outdoors immediately; clean your shoes while they are still wet
- Remove visible caterpillar hairs with a piece of adhesive tape
- A thorough shower, including washing the hair and rinsing the eyes with water
- If you experience a skin reaction , see your family doctor; if you have trouble breathing, call emergency services immediately!
Unlike the web moth, which is completely harmless to humans, oak processionary moths can be identified by their hairs, which can be up to one centimeter long.
