Report

The Lohnsfeld, Wartenberg-Rohrbach, and Winnweiler fire departments were initially dispatched to a chimney fire in Lohnsfeld. However, upon arrival, it became apparent that the building was visibly filled with smoke and that people were likely still inside. Consequently, a team wearing self-contained breathing apparatus immediately began rescue operations upon arrival. In addition, several ambulances were called to the scene.

Shortly thereafter, one person was rescued from the building and handed over to emergency medical services for examination. Since four other people, including two children, were still missing, the emergency responders opened all apartment doors and searched the entire building. After no one else could be found in the smoke-filled apartments, the emergency responders searched for the source of the smoke and discovered an open furnace door in the boiler room, as well as significant soot buildup on the ceiling and walls. The responsible chimney sweep was then called in; he subsequently arrived at the scene and inspected the chimney. Since soot deposits were visible there, the chimney sweep temporarily shut down the chimney and the heating system and cleaned the chimney. In addition, the fire department ventilated the building to completely remove the detectable carbon monoxide from the apartments.

The police and the standby ambulance from Münchweiler were also at the scene. After the fire department completed its operations, the scene was handed over to the police.
