In Winnweiler, passersby noticed smoke coming from a trash can at the train station, so they notified the control center. The Winnweiler Fire Department was then alerted and dispatched a vehicle to the scene. Upon arrival, the report was confirmed, whereupon the firefighters opened the trash can and extinguished the fire with a bucket pump. The Federal Police were also notified of the incident so that they could arrange for Deutsche Bahn to replace the damaged trash can.
