A traffic accident involving two vehicles—a passenger car and a truck—occurred on the A 63 between the Winnweiler and Göllheim interchanges in the direction of Mainz. The Winnweiler Fire Department subsequently responded to the scene with its rescue unit.

Once on the scene, it quickly became apparent that two of the three people in the car were trapped inside the vehicle, so rescue operations using hydraulic rescue equipment began immediately. A rescue helicopter was already on the scene when the fire department arrived, and additional rescue resources were on their way. In total, three ambulances (RTW), one patient transport vehicle (KTW), one emergency physician response vehicle (NEF), two rescue helicopters (RTH), and the Medical Intervention Car (MIC) were ultimately at the scene. Due to the large number of people involved and the corresponding number of rescue resources, the Health Operations Command was also on site.

One of the injured individuals was in immediate danger of death, which is why a so-called emergency rescue was carried out in consultation with the emergency medical services. The second person in the car also had to be extricated from the vehicle using hydraulic rescue equipment and was seriously injured, though the injuries were not life-threatening at that time. The rescue operation was nevertheless carried out very quickly. The third person involved sustained only minor injuries, as did the truck driver. All patients were transported to appropriate hospitals using various emergency vehicles.

At the same time as the rescue operations were underway, the highway was completely closed. In addition, the Enkenbach Fire Department was called in to divert traffic coming from Sembach off the highway at the Winnweiler interchange. The Münchweiler Fire Department was also called in to close the highway on-ramp at the B48. Subsequently, firefighters from the Winnweiler Fire Department pumped out fuel leaking from the crashed vehicle to prevent further contamination of the roadway and the environment. The drone unit was also deployed to take aerial overview images of the accident scene. These images serve for documentation purposes as well as to aid the police in their ongoing accident investigation. The traffic backed up between the Winnweiler interchange and the accident site was subsequently rerouted past the scene via the shoulder.

Also present at the scene were the Fire and Disaster Protection Inspector (BKI), the district administrator, the highway patrol, and, later, the highway maintenance department. A total of 72 personnel from the fire department and emergency medical services were on the scene. Once the work was completed, the scene was handed over to the police; the full closure remained in effect until an expert arrived. The highway maintenance department took over the security and traffic diversion measures, allowing the fire department personnel to conclude their operation.
