The on-call service called in the fire department because an oil slick was visible on the surface of the treatment plant’s basin in Börrstadt. The Börrstadt and Winnweiler fire departments responded to the scene and assessed the situation on site. After consulting with the treatment plant supervisor, a floating oil absorbent was used to bind the oil and then remove it. In addition, the sewer manholes in the immediate vicinity were inspected to look for any clues as to the source of the oil. However, no findings were made. The police were also at the scene.
