The fire departments of Lohnsfeld, Wartenberg, and Winnweiler were called to a kitchen fire in Lohnsfeld on Monday afternoon. The first responders from the Lohnsfeld Fire Department confirmed shortly thereafter that the kitchen of an apartment on the first floor was already fully engulfed in flames.
Together with the Winnweiler Fire Department, which arrived shortly thereafter, the residential building was quickly evacuated, and a team wearing self-contained breathing apparatus was deployed to fight the fire, bringing it under control rapidly. Following the mop-up operations, extensive ventilation measures were also carried out. In addition, the surrounding apartments were checked for carbon monoxide; however, no critical concentrations were detected.
A total of eight people were evacuated from the apartment building and subsequently examined by emergency medical personnel for smoke inhalation; two of them were then transported to a hospital. The police were also at the scene.
