In Imsbach, a strong smell of oil and gasoline was detected coming from the sewer system. Municipal employees on the scene confirmed that the water had been contaminated with oil. The Imsbach and Winnweiler fire departments assisted in containing the oil using so-called oil booms and floating oil absorbents.
As the operation continued, the street was inspected in an effort to locate the source of the contamination. In addition, several residents living along the street reported a distinct smell of oil or gasoline in their basements. The fire department also inspected the affected basements.
