Incident Number:B 130
Date:07.06.2024
Alarm time:15:00
End of operation:08.06. 07:00
Incident keyword:Silo Fire

Report

A smoldering fire broke out in a silo at an industrial facility in Bischheim. The contents of a silo approximately 40 meters high, filled with about 100 metric tons of pellets, caught fire. The cause was reportedly a chemical reaction resulting from moisture in the pellets and heat inside the silo. On site, the pellets are being transported via conveyor belts into the yard to extinguish the fire there. It was not possible to extinguish the fire inside the silo itself, as this would cause the pellets to absorb water and expand.

Firefighting operations began on Friday afternoon, and the Winnweiler Fire Department provided support with its swap-body truck (WLF), 10,000 liters of water, and its drone unit. Numerous units from the municipalities of Kirchheimbolanden and Göllheim were already on the scene. During the night leading into Saturday, the fire—which was difficult to contain—unexpectedly spread, prompting the drone to be deployed once again. Firefighting operations were still ongoing as of late Saturday afternoon.
