The Winnweiler Fire Department was alerted to smoke coming from a building in downtown Winnweiler. Upon arrival, it was discovered that large amounts of carbon monoxide (CO) had been released in an apartment. Even in very small quantities, carbon monoxide is highly toxic. A breathing apparatus team immediately entered the affected apartment and found one person unresponsive. The person was immediately removed from the apartment and resuscitated. Unfortunately, the resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
All other rooms in the building were also checked for dangerous carbon monoxide concentrations, some of which were detected. The measurement vehicle stationed in Zellertal was called in for this purpose. An additional five people were tested by the ambulance crew from the Münchweiler branch of the German Red Cross (DRK) for CO levels in their blood using a special device; however, no critical levels were detected. After all areas had been ventilated and no dangerous readings were detected, the scene was handed over to the police.
